Morning Visitor

At about 7 am, Barney was barking wildly at the front window. At first, I couldn't see what he was so upset about, but then - there it was! This little deer stood there and started eating the fruit off of the loquat tree. (I hope he spit out the seeds - they're poisonous!) I ran to get my camera, and carefully opened the front door and took this shot. Of course, it scared the poor thing off.

I've been thinking of putting some deer food in my back yard - far away from the house. We have several deer that roam the neighborhood (there's a lot of wooded areas here). I'd love to have these little guys come by every morning and get some nourishment. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Is it a good or bad idea? BTW - I don't have anything in my yard that I would mind if they ate - no garden or flowers, etc.

No experience with it either, alas. But this is one little beauty indeed. Look at those glowing eyes!

Nanc, I use to have a few come to the last place I lived. I know some people go to great lengths to not have them. But if you don't have a garden there what could be the harm?
You could get some more great photos like this.. ! Love it!

I know they are notorious for eating gardens and flower borders and even venture close to a house for the petunias in a pot. If you have neighbors with gardens they might not like it if you feed them. In some communitees they have become such a nusance that it is unlawful to do so.

Deer are overabundant and a terrible pest in my community. We even had to cull 250 of them this past winter. But I still had 5 pregnant does lounging in my yard Sunday morning, and many of my newly emerging plants had been chomped. Guess who? Deer are best left alone as the wild creatures they are supposed to be. Be careful what you wish for!

Well, I did decide not to try to feed the deer. I'm not sure how many are here in my development - and we are surrounded by more woods - so I guess I'll just have to be satisfied if I get to see them once in awhile!
