But, I brought these home and finished them, and I'm liking them a whole lot better now! Heck, I even decided to put the bird one on Etsy!

Yesterday, I conducted my first Acrylic/Collage Class. It was so much fun! All the students got in the groove and produced some mighty fine work! We started the day with painting tissue paper for collage. Then we got down to business and got creative! Here are the students and some of their work!

My Etsy Shop

Yay! I got to get into the studio today and play! This is my third in a series, using that wonderful paper from 7 Gypsies that have words on them. I saw this photo of the 2 birds in a magazine, and imagined them as an old married couple - both talking at once - and knowing how much they loved each other! If you look closely, there are also a pair of frogs in the grasses below (courtesy of a cool napkin!) This was also made on an Multimedia Art Board, like the others. Don't know yet what I'll do with them all - maybe mount them on wood. We'll see.

I finally got my computer back and up and running! How did we ever survive without these contraptions?!

While it was away, I was able to do some cleaning in my studio. I'm beginning to feel like one of those people on Hoarders! I took everything out of this space, and then had to figure out how to put it all right back in. So that's why I have this tiny little space in this nice, big room to make art! This room is the only storage we have in the house, so everything that doesn't have a place, goes in there. And, since I keep buying art supplies, it's starting to fill up!

And, tomorrow, I hope to make some art!!!

My laptop is going away today -- back to the Toshiba Notebook Depot. I have no idea how long it will take them to fix the problem and get it back to me. So, in the meantime, I will be going to the library a lot to use their computers. But, I won't be able to download photos, so any posting I do here, will be text only (How Boring!).

While I'm not getting sucked into the Internet's black hole, maybe I'll find some time to clean up my studio and start getting myself ready for the collage class I'm teaching at the end of January. Now, that would be a big accomplishment!

A Little Bit Crazed!

So now, my new computer is about to leave me for awhile. It's still working (for the time being), but keeps showing me this box that says that there is a hard disk error. I took it to my computer guy, and he backed up everything for me and said that it needs to go back to Toshiba and probably will come back to me with a new hard drive. AAARRRRGGGGHHHH! I've finally gotten this thing to the place where I'm comfortable. Now I have to do it all over again.

Thinking I will be without a computer over Christmas, when we will be doing some traveling, made me just a little bit crazed! Yes, I am addicted! So, I went to Barnes & Noble and bought the new NOOK TABLET. Of course, there is a learning curve, so I'm still wired! But, I will have some electronic gadget with me that I can access the internet with. Whew!

Back to the new collage: I'm going to be teaching some beginner collage classes after the new year, so I thought I better come up with some different ways to do it. This one started with collaging the canvas, adding paint, then adding my own painted papers (the yellow and purple) - and even the black lines are actually painted tissue paper rolled up and glued down! And I added some stamping and stenciling, and there you go!

I've still got another idea brewing, and hopefully, I can get it done before the end of the week. If I gon't get back - I hope all of you have a Wonderful, Happy, Merry Christmas!

Well, I didn't get to collaging with my painted papers - yet! I wanted to try using one of my magazine girls in a collage. I have this pad of great papers from 7 gypsies that I love! Several of the pages have great words on them (also see last post). Sometimes it helps to have word or color or theme to work with. Especially for me - I don't seem to be too creative without a boost!

Anyway, it was a fun collage to do. And, I'm really loving the Multimedia Art Boards! (I'm thinking that I can mount them on a piece of wood for hanging.) The circles are part of some great napkins that I got. I tore around the whole circle, and didn't really like the way it looked, so I cut the half circles out. Now, I love the whole one and not so much the half ones - go figure!

Now I'm really going to start something with my painted papers!

Collage Play

After spending the last few weeks making stuff to sell -- I finally got back into the studio to play! I'm starting to think of my class coming up next month, so I want to play with collage as much as possible in the coming weeks!

I really loved the way this one came together. I was trying to figure out how I could use this magazine picture of the bird -- and somehow, I found the right papers.

Next, I'll use some papers that I painted today.

A Childhood Memory

If you are around my age, you remember a time before microwaves. And, you probably remember making popcorn on the stove!

I recently read an article in the newspaper about this activity. The writer helped me to understand why I have never liked microwave popcorn. So, off I go to the store to get some popcorn! I remember well making popcorn on the stove (ours was gas then, so it was a little easier to manage the heat) - opening the lid to let some steam escape, and watching as some popcorn bursts out of the pan - melting butter in the pan (we used Parkay Margarine then, instead of butter) - putting on the salt. Trust me, it DOES taste better! I've popped popcorn twice since I read the article, and I remember the pan we used - I think it was only for popcorn - and I've thought of the kitchen I grew up in (that house burned down after my parents moved out) - and I think of my mother. She passed away in 1993, but I think of her every day and miss her terribly!

After I eat popcorn, I always want something chocolate! My sister reminded me that Mother made fabulous fudge, and we would usually have fudge with our popcorn! What popcorn memories do you have?

Another Sale on Fine Art America!

So I just was notified that I sold a print of this painting on Fine Art America! I hope this one goes through - but they did order the smallest print (approx. 8" square) on Canvas - so it should be ok. I'd love to see how this looks since the original was done on a piece of wood, all collaged with gloss gel medium. I think it would look cool! Anyway, it's nice to see another sale! Speaking of .. . we're having a small art show and sale after church services for the next 3 Sundays -- maybe I'll get lucky then!

So, Taylor Swift got a little done-up! (See previous post) This was my second piece for the "Faces in Collage" workshop that I've been taking online. I've decided that I'm really not creative enough to do it the way that Sharon (and a lot of the others) have done. So, I'm going to try to figure out how to use the faces in another way with other backgrounds, etc. Since I'm not very good at drawing, painting on collaged faces is just the ticket for me!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Now comes the craziness before Christmas! Luckily, for me, it's not too bad.

Trying to catch up!

I just realized that I haven't posted for a week. It's been a busy one! I've finished the 4 commissioned "Girls" - made a quilt for church - and have been trying to watch all the videos for my two online classes. Here is the start for the second one that I'm trying for "Faces in Collage". I never did finish the first one - I couldn't figure out how to integrate the background, but I'm still going to try (whenever I find some time!).

Of course, today - which I thought was going to be a gloriously "free" day - is going to be another errand-filled busy one! But, sooner or later, it just HAS TO SLOW DOWN!

Multimedia Artboards

I ordered these Multimedia Artboards from Dick Blick last week. Just wondered how they might work for my collage class in January. They are wafer thin, textured on one side and plain on the other. I first put some acrylic paint and lots of water on it for the background, dried it - then collaged with painted papers and a beautiful napkin that Sharon Tomlinson sent to me. I must admit, I think I'll get a bunch of these for the class. It took a lot of abuse, but did not buckle one bit. I'm not sure how I felt about painting on it, though - but collage worked great! This one is 8" x 10" - and I bought a pack of 5 for $4.99.

So here's where I am now.

I think I'm pretty well done with the face, so now it's time to work with the background. I must admit, I really thought the hard part would be the face, but I think it's going to be the background. You really need to have an imagination to do the next part, and I fear that I'm sorely lacking in that department! We'll see!

A new challenge!

So, I started "Faces in Collage" - an online workshop by Sharon Tomlinson. This is the beginning of my first project. If you go to her blog, you can see all the gorgeous paintings she has done, beginning with magazine collage. I've got my fingers crossed that I can figure out just how to do it! Sold on Fine Art America!

So I just got a notice that a print of this painting sold today on Fine Art America! The buyer purchased the print on a gallery wrapped canvas in a 22" x 36" size. I'd love to see how that looks! The watercolor original painting was done on 9" x 12" paper, I think. Anyway, it's fun to get a sale - I've been on that site for 2 years, and this is the only 2nd print that I've sold. And a couple of cards. However, I watch it almost daily, and it's amazing how many people look at my art!

UPDATE: I just received a notification that the photo of this painting that I sent in is too low in resolution to enable them to make the larger print. They wanted me to take another photo and send it in, but I no longer own this painting - it resides in another state! So, no sale for me! Oh well, I was happy for a little while!

City Lights

Last week, I recived my new copy of Somerset Studio. In it, is a little article about using Purple, Turquoise, Mustard and Black. I thought it was intriguing, so I tried a little painting with those colors. The article was by Dina Wakley, by the way - and she also used a lot of white. I'm still not satisfied with my abstracts yet - much more practice to do!

In other news, I'm starting a new class soon - "Faces in Collage" by Sharon Tomlinson! I'm kinda scared (I usually am!) cause faces are so new to me, but I'm gonna give it my best try! Also this month, I'm taking another online course from Christy Tomlinson (no relation to Sharon) - this one on SheArt2 - doing more with the girls! I think I'm starting to love taking online classes - they never end, they are forever on your computer - and you can do it at your own pace. I'm sure that I'll be posting soon with new paintings from these classes!

Oh, and just so you know, I did receive the Birthday Flowers from my hubby, and they are gorgeous!

What a Birthday!

So, today is my birthday! This plant arrived in the afternoon from my daughter (who lives in Kansas City) - I thought it was a little different, but I kinda like it. The card on it said it is a Money Tree. I called Serena and was describing the plant, and she asked me to send her a photo of it, so I did. Later, I received an email from her saying "This isn't what I ordered!" Later we spoke again, and she said she had called the florist here in Dunnellon, who told her that no, this isn't a money tree! It's some kind of gardenia. So, the florist will call me tomorrow to see what I want to do.

On top of that, my dear husband (who NEVER orders flowers) took it upon himself to order me flowers for my birthday this year. Of course, the flowers never showed up -- and when he called them, (long story short) they discovered that the order was never put through! So, after much huffing and puffing, he agreed to getting my flowers tomorrow - at a 30% discount, of course!

But, I did get a chocolate cake from my sister! That's the good news!

This week I finished and delivered my first "Girl" commission. My friend, Becky, ordered a girl to give to her daughter, Hannah, for her birthday next month. I first met Hannah when she was about 2 years old - she'll be turning 10 in November. Here's a photo of her taken this summer at our Mystery Dinner Theater at church. She's such a doll! I hope I did her justice with my painting!

Perchance to Sell!

I showed some of my stuff to Nancy Meyers at Grumble's House on Monday - and she agreed to put my "Girls", these 2 paintings that are on 12" square wood, and my fabric bowls and coasters in her shop through the Christmas season. I'm hoping that after the first of the year, she'll have some space that I can rent, and put all my stuff in there. I'd love to have a place to show and sell my paintings and other crafting that I do. Right now, I'd just love to be able to get all these things out of my studio! And, Grumble's House is the busiest place in this little burg. They have customers that come from all over the state. Wish me luck!

A Tale of Two Torties

That's Penny on the left and Sheba (the new one) on the right. As you can see, they really don't look a lot alike! Except, at a distance you have to look at the size. We're still having a lot of hissing from Sheba whenever Penny is in her sight. And, Heaven forbid if Penny ever gets up close! Then it goes to screaming like she's being killed! And, I know that it's only been a week, but I'm getting a little fed up with it. The good news is that Barney (the dog) can actually come up to her and touch her without so much as a sniff! Praying for Peace!

This one is for my baby girl, Serena! She always was a sweet little girl - and now that she's a woman with 3 kids, husband, dogs, cat, and trying to work 3 part-time jobs, she still finds time for her friends or anyone else that needs her. She wears me out just thinking about all she does! So, Serena, I salute you!

Now, this is a photo of my Studio! How in the world did it get to be such a mess? It seems like I clean it up and organize it several times a year, but still it manages to get to this state quickly! Do any of you have this problem? Yikes! No wonder it's hard for me to get in there and try to create!

Trying to save a life

Caught her yawning!

It's so hard to be a SuperHero! My neighbor has been telling me about this little cat since before Ziggy disappeared. She has been living at the Rainbow Springs Private Beach by the Rainbow River. My neighbor and a lot of other ladies often go there in the mornings to float down the river, and they bring the kitty food. They all have been worried about her, with winter coming, not very many folks will be going to the river to feed her, and there are alligators there, also. And don't forget the coyotes, foxes and bears!
So, when Ziggy vanished, she felt it was my duty to save this little cat. I went there yesterday, and the kitty was so sweet and loving - so I took a chance and brought her home. And now, she has decided that I am the enemy! Lots of growling and hissing going on.
I've kept her out on the screened- in pool deck, but all she really wants to do is get outside! This morning, though, she came to me and rubbed up against me and wanted to be petted. Progress! Then I let my cat Penny out and it was kinda cool. They just ignored each other till Penny gave up and came inside. Unfortunately, my dog, Barney got out and scared her to death! Two steps back. Now, it looks like rain.
I think it's interesting that she is a tortious - just like Penny. Except Penny has long legs, tail and face while this one has short legs, tail and a kind of Persian shaped face! I'm still trying to figure out a name for her. Sure hope she warms up soon - I'd love to get her in the house and become one of the family!

Back to normal-- kind of....

Bill came home from the hospital on Tuesday - a day earlier than expected. He is recovering nicely, but still in a lot of pain. He is such a good patient! He does everything he's supposed to do, and never complains.

So, today, I finally got back in the studio and started 2 more girl canvases. These girls will be "S" and "T" - I'm almost to the end of the alphabet! And, I've got 3 orders for some specific girls - those will be fun to do!

Mid-morning yesterday, I looked out my back window and saw a large coyote in my back yard! I made a noise, and he just stopped and looked at the house - and stood there until I started yelling at him to go away! I've never seen one during the light of day - which makes me think that he was the one that got my poor little Ziggy, and was coming back for more. So, from now on, Penny will never be going outdoors. She can go back to spending time on the screened in pool deck, and if that isn't good enough -- Tough!

Hospital Update

Bill's surgery went well. He got out of ICU this morning, and moved to a room. He'll be in the hospital until next Wednesday. I got booted out of the hotel because of a home game for the Gators - no rooms in Gainesville, period! But, I'll check back in on Sunday.

I'm still having issues with Blogger not keeping me signed in, so that's why I haven't been commenting on anyone's posts -- but I am looking at them! Also, still having some problems with this computer, and with the wi-fi at the hotel. Hopefully, when I get back home, I can get these problems taken care of.

Ok, so I got my new computer. The photo program I always used is no longer on it. They did save my pictures from the old computer and I did get to upload this from my new "viewer", but I can't resize them, so if you click on them,they're probably huge. Still have a ways to go to figure all this out - I've used the same stuff for over 10 years, so this is giving me a headache! I'll keep playing all weekend, and see what I can do.

Bill will be going into the hospital Sunday afternoon, and his surgery will be on Tuesday morning. I'll be staying in a hotel in Gainesville all next week, so I should have plenty of time to work on this computer. I am glad that I now have a laptop to take with me -- I'm sure I would have gone in withdrawal if I didn't have a computer with me!

More Frustrations!

So, I guess it's not enough that I lost a cat this week -- I also had to lose my computer!

Last night, we had another Florida Thunderstorm. I was trying to comfort my dog who barks incessantly when there is thunder, and lightning struck really close! Of course, I hadn't unplugged my computer (like I usually do) - so it got fried! Off I go to Best Buy today, and spent three hours getting terribly confused - I think I'm too old for this! Finally, it was done - I bought a new laptop. They're going to transfer all my stuff from the old computer, so that's a good thing. However, I'm learning that most of my programs can't be transfered, so I have a lot of work to do before I'm really back to where I'm comfortable!

Today, someone in line at Best Buy reminded me that things happen in threes - I really didn't need to hear that. The only thing coming up is Bill's surgery next Tuesday. I hope it isn't jinxed! I think I'll go now and have that meltdown that I've been feeling all day.

I Am Heartbroken

My fabulous boy-cat, Ziggy, has vanished. He went out as usual on Tuesday morning. However, usually I make them wait till it's light outside, but that morning he was raring to go - so I gave in. It was about 6 am, and still dark.

Ziggy had proven to me that he would not run off - he always stayed close to the house, with an occasional visit next door with his cat-friend, Max. And, he always came when I called him.

He usually was in the front yard when Barney and I went for our daily walk at about 9am, but on Tuesday, he was not there. I figured he was with Max. Then, we needed to leave at 3pm, so I called and called, and nothing. So, when we got back at about 7pm, I called and called again - no luck. So, we started searching. More nothing!

We live in an area of town called "The Woodlands". It's called that for a reason - there are areas in the neighborhood that have lots of trees and woods. It's why we spot deer once in a while. Also, there have been known to house coyotes and foxes - and this year, there has been a black bear running around. But, for some reason, I was never worried - of course, I never let the cats out in the dark, either! Don't bother beating me up - I'm doing a fine job of it by myself. Yes, I KNOW BETTER!!!

I had convinced myself last night that Ziggy had probably met his demise by one of the critters, and I just had to accept it. Then, I had a dream that I saw him at the neighbor's house, and he was hurt. I woke up with a new purpose! I figured that no one would be able to pick him up (he runs the other way whenever anyone tries) - and we live in a very small town without a shelter. But, IF he was attacked and hurt, maybe someone would take him to one of the vet hospitals in town! I just knew that he was sending me a sign! I impatiently waited till they opened and called, expecting him to be there. But, alas, no one has brought in a sweet black cat with white paws. So now I'm back to trying to accept this. I miss him terribly.

And, here is the gift idea my friend Gretchen came up with! Now, if I can just find a place to put my paintings in, along with some of these flyers. I took them to church on Sunday, and got 2 orders from a friend for her granddaughters for Christmas!

Mary & Me

First up is Mary. She is dedicated to my sweet daughter-in-law. She's a kindergarten teacher, so you know she has a lot of patience! She has been married to my son, Eric, for 18 years, and is mother to my grandsons, Alex & Zack. She's the perfect partner for my son - and I love her dearly! But since she is surrounded by all that testosterone, I thought her phrase should show the girly side of her!

And, of course, I had to make one for myself! And the phrase says it all: I do have a wonderful life! A great husband, 2 fabulous adult children and 5 grandchildren - what else does a girl need? Except more shoes, maybe?

My friend, Gretchen, came up with a super idea for me to make these girls to order for gifts. More on that later!

The Cards

So, this shows you how I cropped the paintings to fit on a card. I copied the photos on simple white card stock, so they still have that kind of vintage feel. You really can't see it, but there are some seriously beautiful scrapbooking papers acting as mats on these. I'm pretty happy about them - I'll take some into Patsy's on Wednesday and see if there's any interest.

I know you all must be getting really tired of seeing these - but I'm afraid it's all I'm doing right now! My goal is to make a girl for every letter in the alphabet, and I'm not even half way there!

I did discover that I like it when I use a friend or family member as a muse. So Kathleen was made for my friend who takes care of my dog, Barney, whenever I need it. She used to have her own shop - "The Barktique" - here in Dunnellon when I first moved here. She's just a delight, and writes a column for the local weekly paper. I don't know what I would do without her to take care of Barney - he loves her, and it makes me happy to know that he's very well taken care of!

And, I also like the idea of giving these pieces to the person that inspired them! It certainly is better than having a ton of them take up space in my studio!

The minister of my church, Lauri Gist, was my subject for this one. She is the most calm, pleasant and loving person I know. She has helped me in ways that she doesn't even know - so I thought I would dedicate a girl to her - and I'll be giving it to her soon.

I finished up Jenny this morning. Now, the fun part! Starting 2 more canvases! I like making them two at a time - I use a lot of the same paint on both, so there's not so much waste. Also, it gets my juices flowing, having to figure out what will be different about each girl. I usually name them before I start, so they have a little story.

I finally figured out how to crop them for the cards. I'll post a card next time so you can see how they are turning out.

It's been raining here since 4:00 this morning, so it's a great day to get into the studio and play!

OMG! Blogger has a new interface to post on. I went through the whole thing, and my post did not post! I thought I was done for. After lots of searching, I did find out that I could use the old system - so here goes again!

So, here is Isabella! These are so addicting! It reminds me of when I was a little girl and I would design paper doll clothes out of old wallpaper books! I would have to have just the right paper doll - she had to be an adult, with her arms away from her body, and have on a strapless bathing suit. I was so picky! I wish I had some now to look at!

I'm working on Jenny now, and she should be ready by tomorrow.

I wish Blogger would quit changing things - it's very disconcerting for an old dog like me!

So today, I started two more canvases for my girls. This is the part that I think I like the most! Putting on papers, paint, stamps, texture - trying to get a feel for what these pieces will say. At this point, I have no idea what the girls will look like, or what the words will be. Right now it's all about making a great background. But it will speak to me ... soon!

I met Gretchen in Houston in the early 80's, and we were both in advertising at the time. We became fast friends, and even though I moved away in 1988, we have remained close. When I had my quilt shop, I would visit with her and her husband, Sam, every October during Quilt Market. I remember her visiting me in Kansas City during a snowstorm, and she walked our dog in the snow. Having lived in Southern California and Houston, she never really got to experience that kind of snow! Then there was the infamous road trip that she took with us from St. Petersburg, FL, up the coast to Destin. I got so sunburned, I laid in the hotel for one solid day! Fun times!

And, of course, when I needed a name that began with "H", who else would I choose but my wonderful granddaughter, Haley! I blogged a bit about her when she came to visit this summer, but I have to tell you I think she's just great! Just starting to be a teenager, so mood swings abound - but we had a grand time anyway! She loves to draw, and she was moved up to Art 3 (instead of Art 2) right after school started. Love her!

As far as the paintings go, these were done on 6" x 12" canvases, and now I know why Christy likes them so - the size is just perfect for these little gals. Unfortunately, they're not the right size for me to use them for cards - so I think I'll do a little creative cropping, and I think I can make them work.

I finished watching all the videos of Christy Tomlinson's SheArt Workshop. It was so much fun, and I learned a lot of new fun things! Now, my goal is to try to figure out how to make these into MY original artwork. I'm always excited when I get to learn someone else's art processes, but then I feel like I'm just copying - and I really don't want to do that!

Also, Christy does her art on 6" x 12" canvases. I ordered some and they just came yesterday. So, the first two were done on 12" x 12" canvas, and I didn't like it -- too much background, girls too little. These were done on 9" x 12", and I like them better, but am anxious to try the smaller canvases.

One way that I have personlized these little girls is in the phrases. I've tried to come up with phrases that express me and my life. So, we'll see how the next phase goes. I might figure out a cool way to make it mine - or, I just might change it all together!

Here's my next little girl - "Danielle". I forgot to tell you that the "Sisters" names are "Beth" and "Chloe". Do you sense a method to my madness? Also, I decided to include numbers for each one in this series. I think it will be fun to see if I can make enough to put on cards that I sell in my local beauty salon. I've had very good luck with my watercolor cards there, but I think it's time to do something different.

On another note, we had a post-op appointment for Bill today, and the news isn't very great. Looks like we will be seeing a big operation in his near future. I won't get into the details, but life as we know it will start looking a lot different soon. To his credit, I'm sure that HE can handle it all - I think I'm just worried about ME! Gulp!

OMG! Two posts in one day! But, I started this one yesterday, and finished it just a little bit ago and was so excited that I just had to post it!

I'm still not quite where I want to be with this technique, but I have a lot of goodies coming in the mail that just might help me. And, I still have several of Christy's videos to go through.

I have a goal of making a lot of these gals, and I hope I don't get side-tracked by some other new, cool technique! Pray for me!

I absolutely love the internet! Case in point: Don't remember quite how I found her, but I did find Saundra Lane Galloway's blog - from reading her blog and comments, I then found Diane Salter's blog - and after reading some of her older posts, I came across Christy Tomlinson and her fabulous "She Art Online Workshop"!!

So, for the last couple of days, I have been glued to my monitor, watching videos of Christy teaching this marvelous way she has of backgrounds, textures, girls and words! While I waited for the videos to load, I went into my studio and started playing around in my art journal. So, the first of my She Art girls, "Anna", was born there. And, I'm not too happy with the background, but I still love her!

There is still a lot more to learn, but now I will be putting these girls on canvases, and exploring what else I can do for them. Stayed tuned!

Domino Pendant Starts

I must have been living under a rock, cause I had never heard of this fab craft! I happened to see it on Art Play Today, and instantly started researching! Most of what I saw deals with stamping, alcohol inks and lots of other stuff that I don't have (and can't get till I go to Ocala) - so I thought, "what the heck" - and started playing with my hand painted tissue paper. And, I love it! I can still stamp on top, if I want, or leave it as is. I still need to go to Ocala tomorrow to get the jewelry finds to finish - and they need a coat of gloss gel, but I was so excited, I just had to show them to you! And, I'm happy that I've found yet another thing to do with all the painted tissue paper I have!

Art Journaling

OK, I never saw this coming! On one of my art book buying sprees, I acquired the book, "Art At The Speed Of Life" by Pam Carriker. I read through it once, and figured that it wasn't for me. It was mostly about making an art journal, and I didn't think that would interest me. Of course, I was wrong!

Lately, I've been spending a lot on time on the computer, watching as many videos as I can on youtube. And, I got involved with a bunch on art journaling. When I was young, I never even kept a diary - cause I was afraid that someone would see it, and figure out what a loser I was! I had to have perfect spelling, grammar and punctuation. I still fear sending out a post or an email with a misspelled word! Heaven Forbid!

So, I guess you can see why I would be hesitant to put my art in a journal. But, now I realize that it's a great place to try out new techniques, play around with color and figure out how to draw. If I feel like posting it, so be it - but no problem if I don't!

So now I'm interested - do you keep an art journal?

11" x 15" Acrylic/Collage on Watercolor Paper

Here's how I finished the kite dilemma - I just added more paint, stamping and collage! I'm really having fun with this technique, but I'm anxious to learn more and do more! Through Art Play Today, I've been watching videos, and learning more stuff - which to me, is sometimes more exciting than actually doing it!

Bill's biopsy on Monday went well - we'll go back on August 25th to find out the treatment plan. We did discover that he won't be having more surgery. But they will be doing chemo to his bladder, and that should take care of it. Worst case scenerio is removal of the bladder, but hopefully, that won't be needed. Thanks for all your kind thoughts and prayers.

New Beginning

Now that "The Box" has left the building, I thought it would be fun to play with some of the new papers that I got. So, I gessoed a quarter sheet of watercolor paper, and played with some paint, watercolor pencils, stencils and stamps to make a fun background. My intent was to then collage in a vertical manner on top of this beginning.

Well, I was having a grand time until I decided that the little boy needed a kite! After trying to draw and paint a kite - it looked like "you know what" (cows do this in the field)! So, more gesso has been added and I'll try to figure out how to save this piece. I really like most of it, so I want to make it work!

Tomorrow is Bill's surgery, so I'll be tied up all day. Hopefully, I can get back to it on Tuesday and magically, things will work out!

It's Finished!

Yay! I finally finished the box today! For those of you who have never used this particular technique - here's how I did it. First, I painted tissue paper with the colors that I needed. Then, I tore the paper into little pieces (usually about 1" x 2"), and glued them on with gel gloss medium, one at a time, overlapping - around and around the box. Going around the curly bits was tricky, as was going into each slat on the top. By the way, it took me about 30 minutes to go around each time. I was standing all the time, and it got so sticky I was constantly washing my hands! Needless to say, it was hard to do more than one round at a time.

Next, these are the letters that will go on the front of the box. I will let the committee chairman glue those on after he puts on the closure and the lock.

New Pretty Papers!

Last month, I subscribed to "Somerset Studio" magazine - and yesterday, I received this pack of 24 art papers in the mail! There are some really cool papers here to play with. That is, IF I ever get to paint again ....

I haven't posted in a couple of weeks, cause I've just been to lazy to do anything! Then, last week, I decided to start a Prayer Quilt Ministry at church, so I made a quilt and got it all ready for church on Sunday. I also did a little bit of work on the "box"!

So, my goal this week is to FINISH the box! I'm finally past all the curly bits, and am now working on the top - the end is in sight! I truly think it is turning out great - but I will be glad to get it out of my house!

And, on top of everything else, my husband has some cancer in/around his bladder. So, we've been going to Gainesville to the VA Hospital a lot. He'll have another biopsy in early August, and then more surgery after that. I'm praying for a good outcome for all of this.

Frustrating work

Ok, so now I'm at the middle of the box! And, I'm about to pull out all my hair! Didn't realize how hard it would be to try to collage around all these curly hinges! Well, actually, they're not hinges, just decorative things - but still! I was having such a good time with the bottom - it's all smooth, and just going around and around the box! And yet to come is the top -- it's got it's own set of issues! Please say a prayer for me!

So, last night when I was trying to go to sleep, this painting appeared in my head. Well, kinda. Anyway, I got up and drew it so I would paint it today. Now, in my head, it was different colors, and not quite so stylized - more free-form. But, you know how it is - you get started, and the paint chooses itself, and I decided to actually use a ruler, and drew a real circle... so here you go.

And, when I showed it to my husband, he interpreted it as something religious - well, it is a cruciform composition - but I only saw shapes and colors! I don't even know what to title it - so far I've come up with "Pendant". That seems to fit. (Actually, it looks like an earring to me!)

Last night, I put black gesso on this 1/4 sheet of watercolor paper. I knew I wanted to collage on it, but all day today I just kept looking at it and going away. I could not get inspired!

So, I watched more videos, and read more books, mainly Jane Davies' Collage Journey, and Sharon DiGiulio's Collage Therapy. I tell ya, it was the "Blank Page Syndrome" all day long! FINALLY, about an hour ago, I just went in and started! And, finished!

It started out as one thing, and ended as another! Per Jane Davies, I was going to make an all-over collage, then either cut it up into bookmarks, or find cool "little paintings" to then make into bigger ones. But when I got started, I discovered that this is an "all about me" collage. And, believe it or not -- I like it!

I was searching in all my piles for some collage paper, and I came across these three little collages that I did back in March, when the collage bug first hit me. I never really liked them, but I didn't know why - so I just started playing around with them, adding some paint and some stamping - and some shiny gold, of course. Simplicity

I'm so worn out, working on the "box" -- I just had to take a time out and play with some paint! Yesterday, I spent a good portion of my day in front of the computer. I did a search on bing for "mixed media" - and was rewarded with lots of little videos on different techniques! So, it got me all excited to get in there and try something!

This piece started out with gesso on the canvas, and drawing objects in the gesso - let it dry then play! I'm still not too happy with my results, but what I really need to do is practice, practice, practice!

So, of course, I went to Ocala today and stocked up on supplies and three new books! Good Night Nurse! You would think with all the stuff I already have, and all the books I've already read, that something would stick! Can't help it, I'm addicted to it!!!

The Box Has Been Started!

Well, I've started collaging the box that I told you about a couple of weeks ago. Here's the process: I hand-painted tissue paper, and now am tearing it and collaging it to the box with clear gel medium (I covered the box with clear gesso first and let it dry)

I'm using the same colors that I used in the banners -- each color represents a month, a disciple and a power of man -- these colors are used a lot in our services. I still will be adding reds, oranges, russet, gold and yellows. Then, I'll be adding words that represent our Capital Fund Campaign - "Youth" - "Education" - and "Seniors" that I have stamped on silver painted paper.

It really looks beautiful in my mind! Hope it translates to the box!

Gold Sky Workshop

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a painting class put on by my friends, Lynne & Kelli - also known as: Hershberger/Huff! They have opened a new studio/gallery in Ocala, and they've started having these Friday Night Painting Parties! For a very small fee, you can come and paint, eat, drink and just have a great time! Everything is provided - and it was so much fun!

Here are our hostesses and teachers! The horse is for "Horse Fever" - Lynne will be painting him!

Here is my beginning - they had already painted the canvas fuschia, and I had just applied the first of my gold leaf.

Some of the class - all in all, there were 10 students. Everyone did the same painting, but they were all different! What a great experience! I've wanted to learn this technique ever since I saw the first one that Lynne did - over a year ago.

You know, trying to learn to paint abstracts is so different from any other kind of painting. Usually, you have a photo or idea to paint from, and the painting actually looks like something that you've seen in real life!

I've been spending a lot of time looking in books and online at abstract paintings. I love seeing what different artists have done. But, of course, I don't want to copy anyone else's work - so I've been thinking of what I could do that would be different. Not having much luck in this!

So, here we are! This started out with an idea of dripping paint in all directions on this canvas. After looking at it for awhile, I started out applying darks - and soon, it took on a life of it's own. I can't say that I'm happy with the way it turned out, but I did enjoy the process. I'll always be searching for the "just right" technique that will be uniquely mine!

Gotta Get Creative!

Since I'm one of the "Creative Ones" at my church, I'm asked from time to time to do something creative!

When I had my Quilt Shop, I was asked to make 12 banners to hang in the Sanctuary. These were fun to make - very labor intensive - and after about 6, I was worn out. But, I carried on, and am very proud of my accomplishment!

I also offered watercolor painting lessons in the church, and did quite well with those last year. Now, I've been asked to do a very challenging creative thing - decorate (paint, collage, etc.) this wooden "Treasure Box" to hold the cash donations for our Capital Fund Campaign. I've been given carte blanche to do whatever I want to do! No direction, other than to make it beautiful!

So, of course, my creative juices have halted - screaming, "Nooooooo - don't make me!" I've been toying with a couple of scenerios - mainly collage, but am so afraid to start!

My granddaugher will be going home next Tuesday, so that may be the perfect time to start on this project. (I don't think I can delay it forever!) Wish me luck!

Playing!

This morning, I practiced a technique from Mary Todd Beam's book: "The Creative Edge" -

What fun! On gessoed watercolor paper, I scribbled 2 different fluid acrylic paints straight from the bottle onto the paper, then drew a line across the top with the 3rd color. Then, using a credit card, scraped the paint down to the bottom, and wiped the paint off onto a paper towel. Did this 3 times across the paper - and this is what I got!

The next step is to use another color (after it dries), and paint negatively to find some interesting shapes. I'm also drying the paper towels, and can use that as some collage in a future piece.

I'm so excited to be finally doing something with all the books I collected on my trip!

Love In The City

I finally got into the studio last night! I haven't painted for several weeks now, and I decided that I just had to do SOMETHING to break the block I'm in! I've been sitting with this idea for awhile about hearts, but was somehow terrified to put paint on the canvas. So, I finally decided to just go for it, and see what happens!

I have been so mesmerized by Valerie's blog, My View from 1502 ! She is painting and posting every day for 1 year! I need to do something like that to make sure that I keep painting and learning, and not be so afraid that something I do just might not turn out good - and so what!?! Will the sun stop shining? Good Grief!

So, while I'm not quite there, yet - maybe there's hope for me if I would just do something - anything - every day to stretch myself creativly.

Haley's Art

My granddaughter, Haley, is visiting me for a couple of weeks. This is an art piece she did in art class last year. She has been a voracious drawer and painter ever since she could hold a crayon! She's 13 now, and going into 8th grade. This piece was done with oil pastels. I've ordered some for her, and as soon as they arrive, we will be making art!

I wish I had kept up with my early love of art and taken classes when I was her age. It's going to be so much fun to see where she goes with it!

So, my trip to Kansas City went well -- and I managed to drop a few coins on some new art books! You know, usually when I want a new book, I'll try to find it on Half.com, and hardly ever purchase one at FULL PRICE! But, when I'm on vacation, and I have a few bucks in my purse, I go crazy!!!

I'm so in love with Mixed Media (and it's still so new to me), that I want everything I can find on the subject! And, let me tell you, I found a lot! And, there's something that I want to experiment with in every one of these books. Now, if I could just find the time..........

Kansas City Awaits!

Tomorrow, I will be in the beautiful City of Fountains - Kansas City! It's my annual visit with my kids and grandkids. I'm looking forward to it, as I always do!

Update on my last post on Joplin: My son reported that they did all that they can do for now. Authorities have halted individual clean-ups, since there are still people missing, and might be under any rubble. Matt and Kerry and family have moved to a hotel where there is power, and all of their family seems to be safe and in better spirits.

Again, please keep the people of Joplin in your thoughts and prayers.

My Joplin Connection

This is a photo of my son, Eric and his wife, Mary. Mary's entire family lives in Joplin, Missouri.

Her mother and father and brother live in a house close by her sister Kerry and husband Matt and their two children. Eric and Mary live in Lee's Summit, Mo, a suburb of Kansas City.

Yesterday, Kerry and Matt and their children were in their basement as the tornado destroyed their home above them. They managed to get out of their home safely, without injuries. Mary's parents were also spared any injuries - and I think their home was also spared. I don't have any details on Matt's parents, yet.

This morning, Eric and Mary were gathering up supplies and driving to Joplin. I haven't heard yet if they were able to get into Joplin.

This event has shaken me more that I would like to admit. I've lived most of my life in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri - spent many hours in basements when the sirens blew, and never experienced a tornado. I never knew anyone who was in this particular kind of Hell. I have led a very blessed life, never coming into contact with accidents, violence or major weather drama. Just a week without power during an ice storm and another one during some hurricane fly-by. Big deal!

I'm so grateful that none of my extended family was hurt during this event, but I know that they will still be struggling to rebuild their home and town. I feel so insigificant and useless. I'll be leaving Saturday for Kansas City for my annual grandkid fix - maybe then I can discover what I can do to help. The good news is that I'll be bringing my granddaughter, Haley, home with me for a couple of weeks.

Nothing to Report!

I realized that it's been over 2 weeks since I last posted. Boy, how time flies! I haven't been painting much - just painted some more papers and I'm almost ready to start my next flower (this time it's a Bird of Paradise), and hopefully soon, I'll get back in the studio and finish it!

We were in Tallahassee last week for a few days - and when I got back, I had about 25 shows to watch that I recorded! So, there's been a lot of TV watching this weekend! Now, I'm burned out of that, and really want to read and finish the novel I started on the trip. Too many things to do, so little time! I've also been reading a book called "Art & Fear" - "Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking", by David Bayles & Ted Orland. Verrrry Interesting!

Purple ConePOWer!

Finally got back in the studio today and finished my second paper painting! I really wanted to finish it last week, but then my brother & wife came for a visit, and we ran all over the place! Then, I needed a few days to recover - and before I knew it, a week had passed!

So, today is the only day this week that I have nowhere to go, so I MADE myself finish the painting! Here it is before any paper was glued on:

And, here is how it looks now! I love this technique, and I've got plans to do 2 more in this 12" square format, and then we'll see. I'd like to try to do something larger - just not sure of the subject matter.

Morning Visitor

At about 7 am, Barney was barking wildly at the front window. At first, I couldn't see what he was so upset about, but then - there it was! This little deer stood there and started eating the fruit off of the loquat tree. (I hope he spit out the seeds - they're poisonous!) I ran to get my camera, and carefully opened the front door and took this shot. Of course, it scared the poor thing off.

I've been thinking of putting some deer food in my back yard - far away from the house. We have several deer that roam the neighborhood (there's a lot of wooded areas here). I'd love to have these little guys come by every morning and get some nourishment. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Is it a good or bad idea? BTW - I don't have anything in my yard that I would mind if they ate - no garden or flowers, etc.

The Loquat Tree

This huge tree sits on my neighbor's property, but lots of it hang on our side - by the driveway. We've lived here for 9 years, and really never knew what the heck it was. There was a time when I thought it was a Kumquat - and I had tried those fruits, and didn't like them.

Today, a friend was walking out to her car, and spotted the tree and immediately went over and plucked a couple off and popped them in her mouth! She said they were so yummy! I asked her what they were, and she said she wasn't sure, but thought they might be a Loquat. So, I tried one, and was pleasantly surprised! Looked them up online, and sure enough, it's a Loquat Tree!

For years, the fruit on this tree has just rotted and fallen on the ground! Now, I think we just might have to start harvesting it. I know my neighbors never pick it, so I don't think they would care much. Can't believe it took so long to find out what it was!

Paper Painting

So, I told you that I ordered a DVD from Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson. WOW! Is this so much fun! First, I prepared a wood panel (12" square - 1/2" deep), then drew and painted my sunflower with acrylic paints. Then, I tore up little pieces of painted paper (and other papers) and glued them on with gloss gel medium. I left some of the background un-collaged, but the total sunflower is covered with collage! I think it really makes the painting POP! So, I have named this first attempt, "SunPOWer"!

Since I have four of the panels, I think I will try to do 3 more flower collages - and see what's what!

Crazy Spring!

I planted some Jasmine several years ago, so that it would wind up the railing on our front steps. Usually, it doesn't bloom until June, but this year - it was in full bloom this week!

What's going on? Everything seems out of whack lately. Some things are blooming when they shouldn't and some things aren't blooming at all! GRRR - gardening just isn't for me!

My brother and his fiance will be here in a little over a week, and I was hoping that the Jasmine would still be in bloom (it smells just heavenly when you walk up the steps) - but I guess that would be too much to ask!

In painting news : I haven't been doing much of that lately -- kind been in a slump. Then, I found Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson, and ordered her DVD, and now I've come a little bit alive! Can't wait to try her technique for "Paper Painting"! She lives in the Orlando area, so maybe I'll get lucky and be able to attend one of her workshops. More on that later!

Kitty Party!

So today was an absolutely GORGEOUS day! I came home from taking Barney to the groomer, and the cats were having a party in the driveway! Clockwise, from top: Ziggy, Penny (my 2 cats) and the neighboring Max.

I've just started letting my kitties go outside - they just love it! They wear collars, and have their claws - and they're pretty good (so far) about staying close and coming back in after a little while. Max comes around daily to check them out! He used to have to talk to them outside the pool screen, but now he gets to lay around with them. I think he likes it!

Today was the final day of my waterclor class. The ladies said they wanted to learn to paint rocks - so I showed them this technique using a credit card (also used the card for the birch tree). Sometimes this doesn't work for me, but today it did! So, I made a little scene - and there you go!

The Bluebird Comes

Since I was feeling quite unsure about how to proceed with my little triplets (see last post), I decided to dive into some collage! I had a canvas that I had painted and didn't like, so I started covering it with all kinds of goodies. If you click on the picture, I think you can see it better. It started with the dot paper, and then I added a page out of a very old book (circa 1911). I love the look of these pages - the chapter title is at the top of the page "The Coming of the Bluebird". So, that ended up inspiring the rest of the piece.

I started another one today, and painted some more papers. I'm thinking that I like this medium!

Beginnings

So here I am - another new "beginning"! I glued some paper I made to 3 - 5" x 5" canvases. Now what? I've been looking at these things for over a week, and can't decide what to do next! I know I want to stamp some things on them, and maybe use some paint here and there.........but I just can't seem to DO SOMETHING!

I fear that I've been watching too many painting videos - my mind is crammed full of ideas! So, my goal this week is to finally make something happen! Stay tuned!

Wisteria Envy

This is the time of the year that Wisteria is in full bloom, here in Central Florida. Three years ago, I purchased a little "stick" of Wisteria from the local nursery. As the guy was taking it to my car, he told me that it's just like a weed - it'll grow anywhere, and take over everything if you're not careful. That's exactly what I needed to hear, since I'm such a loser when it comes to growing anything! And, I was putting it somewhere that it could "take over"! I lovingly watered and tethered it to the post I wanted it to go on. I knew it would take a few years for the blooms to come -- but now I'm beginning to believe that it will never bloom!

It's just not fair -- my neighbor across the street has this stuff growing like wildfire in his back woods, and my neighbor up the street has one that is massive, and grows all the way up to the top of some trees! (I must admit that I took a bloom from it this morning - the one in the photo.) And there is another gigantic grove of them up the highway - it just grows, and nobody takes care of it!

So, I went on the computer to find out when this thing will ever bloom. Well - it could take anywhere from 3 years to NEVER! Not what I wanted to hear. I guess I'll just keep it going - the nursery told me that this year they received some plants that already had blooms on it, so that's my game plan for next year!

On another note - does anyone have problems getting Blogger to give you paragraph breaks? I hit return 4 times, and it still gives me no spacing! GRRRR

Dogwood Spring

7" x 11" Watercolor

The dogwood trees are all in full bloom right now! My friend, Patsy, has one in her yard that is simply stunning! I must get over there and take a photo of it soon! Anyway, that's what inspired me to paint this little Tufted Titmouse sitting on a dogwood branch. We have a lot of these little guys in my yard. They're so funny - they hang out in the bushes close to the pool enclosure, and my kitties go crazy! Ahhh - Spring feels so good!

Art In The Park

Once again, we had to share the weekend with some rain - so Sunday's crowd was a little small. At least we get to be in the largest pavilion, so we stay nice and dry!

Here in Central Florida, the azaleas are popping out like mad!

It's truly Spring now!

And it's nice enough for the crazy teenagers to be swimming in the river! (It's spring fed, so it's 72 degrees in that water all year round!)

And even though it was very overcast on Sunday, the sunbathers were out in droves!

And the Rainbow River is still one of the prettiest sites around!

Collage Therapy

So, last weekend, I was watching some of the free on-line lessons at Jerry's Artarama, and I came across Sharon DiGiulio who has a couple of DVD's on Collage Therapy! Instantly, I was hooked, and sent off for her videos! They came Wednesday, and I immediately watched and had to try!

These little 5" x 7" studies were done this morning, using her techniques for practicing on watercolor paper, using maps and decorative papers. Below, I've been having such fun creating decorative papers out of tissue paper and some shell paper that I got from Jerry's. And, making my own stamps! I've still got a long way to go with composition, but I'm having such fun!

Now, I have to get my stuff ready for another art show tomorrow - Art in the Park at Rainbow Springs State Park. If you're in the neighborhood, come on down! It's from 9-4 Saturday and Sunday (but it might rain on Sunday).

11" x 15" Watercolor

Today in my painting class, we played with watercolor abstracts on textured paper. You can't see the texture very well in the photo, but it was made with a mixture of spackling paste and a little matte medium. Then spread onto the paper with a foam brush. Then I created texture using combs and other things and let it dry (overnight is best).

Now I'm not sure if it's finished yet, or if I even like it! I have 2 more papers ready to paint, so maybe I'll do those and see what's what!

Homosassa Springs Show

Our first art show of the season opened today! It's at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park, in Homosassa Springs, Florida. This is always a great show - we don't have to share it with any other artists! It's strictly a show for the Citrus Watercolor Club. And, it's indoors, so we don't have to worry about the weather. Of course, we still need good weather, so people will want to come out to the park! So, of course, the temp was in the high 70's today! We have somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-50 artists that participate, so there is an abundance of fabulous paintings!

Another good thing about this show -- we don't have to be there every day for two days! We rotate the people at the desk several times a day. They take all the money and keep the books straight - then the watercolor club sends us a check (minus 20% that we give back to the park) for everything we sold! I was there for the first couple of hours this morning, and we were selling stuff like crazy! Very exciting! By the way, first up on the desk were - (from the left)

And, since I got to set up the evening before, I got a prime spot for my browse box, cards, prints and bookmarks! I didn't win a ribbon this year, but I'm going to try to get pictures tomorrow of the winners. The talent in this club is amazing!

Spring Is Coming!

Even though we can't grow beautiful hyacinths down here in Florida, I did the next best thing! Walmart had a bunch of bulbs in potting soil, just starting to come up. So, I planted them next to my front walk - and now they're starting to bloom. And smell heavenly! I miss that smell so much - and now when I look at them, I feel a certain stirring of Spring!

And, this morning, there were robins in the yard! Usually we get about 3 different flocks doing a drive-by each winter. It was hard to take this photo, cause I just don't have a good enough camera to zoom in. But, it's always fun to see these guys - they hang around in the yard for a few hours, and then they're off again! So, if you're reading this up North -- they're on their way!

Getting Ready

The Citrus Watercolor Club will be having our annual show and sale at Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park in a couple of weeks. This is the show that I won the 1st Place Ribbon in last year! Of course, this year, they've decided to start giving out monetary awards - so now I'll be hard pressed to win! So for the next several days, I will be figuring out which paintings to frame, which ones to put in my browse box, and make sure that I have lots of cards and bookmarks to sell. Then, 2 weeks later, we participate in another show at Rainbow Springs State Park's "Art in the Park". That's usually a good show, also. Last year, I sold quite a lot at both shows - hope it's as good this year!

Yupo Fish

We played with Yupo again in Pat's class today. I was really excited, because I've been watching Mark Mahaffey's video on doing watercolor on Yupo. I've even ordered some Yupo paper, so that I can make the amazing abstracts "just like his"! Oh yeah, in my dreams!! Anyway, it was fun to make the background all swirly like his, but then I couldn't come up with what to do next! So, I decided that it needed fish. But, it was great fun, and I'm still looking forward to my Yupo papers to get here.

Now, I have a question for you -- I've been making lots of bookmarks (see last post), and I've been spraying them with fixatives (I've tried 2 different ones) - and even 3 days later, they still smell like the spray! Does anyone know of a good fixative for watercolor paper that won't continue to smell? I used this stuff on my acrylic canvases, and no smell. I'm hoping that the smell will go away before the art shows! Help!

New Bookmarks!

Today, I worked on making some new bookmarks. We'll be having an art show next month at Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park, and then another show 2 weeks later at Rainbow Springs State Park - so I thought I'd make up a bunch and sell them for $1 each! They're finished on both sides, and sprayed with a fixative, so I'm not going to go to the expense of sleeves for them, or ribbons. They lay flat, and I think they're kinda cool! I think we'll make some in my class next week. They took me all day to make, but I think I can get an assembly line going and hopefully make about 50 or so before the shows.

11" x 15" Watercolor

Today in my watercolor class, we had fun with latex house paint - outlining the image, letting it dry, and then painting! I decided to do a simple one, so I could show the technique. I also have a companion piece in progress, of a hen. They will be Frank and Martha!

In other news - the church where I teach my class, gave us a Student's Art Gallery Wall! Some of my students are members of the church, so they get a lot of pats on the back!

And, speaking of my students, here they are! In the back row, left to right, are Jeanne, Judi and Gloria. And in front are Loree and Maureen. Great job today, ladies!

Paint Around

Last week in Pat's class, we had a Paint Around! Each of us brought in a drawing on paper, as well as our inspiration photo. This was mine (I masked out the bird):

Then, we gave our painting to the person on our right, who painted whatever they wanted to for 20 minutes. The timer went off and it went to the next person on the right for 20 minutes. It went to one more person, and then we were left to finish it! This is how mine came back to me (after I took the masking off).

So in today's class, we finished our own paintings. Here is mine! I felt so lucky - I didn't have to do much to it, except finish the bird. What fun it was!

More Practice

So, while I was waiting for my Robert Burridge DVD's to come, I practiced on a couple more flowers and pear. Then, the video came yesterday - and I had a whole new bunch of practice pieces to do! They started like this:

Paint splattered all over a little sheet of gessoed watercolor paper - throw in some drops of alcohol and let it dry.

Then, go in and paint everything that isn't a floral bouquet! Granted, these could use more work, but the whole idea behind this is to start your creative juices flowing. Work fast, using only a few colors. Below is the first one I did with this technique - so it's a little off kilter, and not a very pleasing shape. But, hey, it sure was fun!

Wildflowers

Another little ditty a la Robert Burridge! I'm so in love with this way of painting! This was another 10 minute warm-up, so it's kinda rough, but I love it! I can't wait to get his DVD. Until then, I'm going to keep on painting pears and flowers. I promise not to post each one (I don't want to bore you!), but maybe at the end of the week, I'll show you what I've been doing.

I have to change gears on Tuesday, though. In Pat's class, we're going to be doing a watercolor paint-around. That should be challenging!

Single Pear Warm-Up

I received my new Cheap Joe's catalog the other day - and as I was looking at all the cool workshops that I will never be able to afford to attend, I found Robert Burridge. Oh man! I ended up ordering 2 of his DVD's (and had to pay a fortune for shipping). But, it's still cheaper than a workshop! Anyway, looking around at his site and Cheap Joe's, I got to preview some of his teachings. I watched him do 3 pears in a row for a warm-up - and loved the way he just slaps the paint on.

He recommends that you do this every time you start to paint, and I can see why! It took me less than 10 minutes to do this exercise. He shows how you start with a little sheet of gessoed watercolor paper, paint a circle and a triangle on top of that with white, then add the red and yellow and blue, and BAM! you have a pear! Next, I want to try his Circus Birds!

Bird Watching

After watching a PBS painting show recently, I was moved to try my hand at painting some birds! Neither one turned out exactly as I wanted them to, but I really like painting birds!

I had purchased this little book on bird watching (that was published in 1955) from the library book store for 50 cents. It's such a sweet little book, with little paintings of all the different birds for people to look for. The previous owners of the book, had labeled all the birds that they had found, and where they saw them. So, I used a few of the birds in the book as inspiration. What fun!

Here is my latest attempt at fluid acrylic with collage. I received an intructional DVD from Ann Baldwin last week. She makes it look so easy! I'm discovering that abstracts often take on a life of their own. This one started out in my mind as simple, pale blue and silver, and ethereal. Well, what happened!? I think it became a much stronger statement - becoming bolder and more activist-like. Those darned fluid acrylics! They're so much fun to play with, I just couldn't stop adding color! Oh well, it is what it is - and, I learned a lot from this piece.

Fire!

When we moved to Florida almost 9 years ago, the house we bought has a very nice fireplace in it. The owners told us that they never used it, and had closed it up so birds and squirrels wouldn't get in it. That was fine with me, cause I couldn't imagine having a fire in Florida. So, I turned that room into a dining room.

Fast forward - and we had the coldest winter ever last year, and this year started out the same way, so I decided to rearrange and turn the dining room into a cozy den - and have the fireplace inspected and any repairs done. So, yesterday, the guy came out and did all that - and so, today, I made fire! Did I mention that it's balmy and warm today? Oh, who cares! I needed to make a fire!

So, after many tries, I finally got some wood to burn! And, it was beautiful for awhile. Meanwhile, we had all the doors and windows open! LOL It's ok - I just know that it will be cold again!

I had such fun today - experimenting with all my new fluid acrylics and trying out a technique by Ann Baldwin, that encompasses collage and stamping. It's always been a struggle, trying to figure out how to come up with an idea for an abstract. In her book, she talks about finding ideas - and when I was at Michaels the other day, I came across this sheet of paper, and bought it because it was cool. Now, I'm thinking it could be the catalyst for a new series!

There's also one for Peace, which will probably be the next attempt!

Blog Anniversary

Three years ago today, this was the first painting that I uploaded onto this blog. At that time, I had been painting for a little over a month. I remember loving painting with oils - and I managed to paint something every day!

This blog was born out of my desire to have a place that my family and friends could go to and see my progress on this wonderful journey. I had no idea that it would be the beginning of new friendships - and that total strangers would find me and comment! What a blessing! Through this blog, I have challenged myself to paint - and to show even the failures. I've "met" many other artists, and love seeing what they do! I've learned so much, and continue to do so by trying other mediums and other styles of painting. Long Live Blogging! Thank you to everyone who peeks in from time to time.

Finally painted again! I haven't been in painting class for awhile. Seems like something comes up every week, and I can't go. This is my rendition of a wonderful photo that I saw on Wet Canvas. I hope I did it justice.

Yesterday, I purchased another cool book on painting acrylic abstracts: Creative Paint Workshop for Mixed-Media Artists. I'm still trying to find ways to tap into my creativity and make some abstracts that I will love! Lots of great ideas in this book! Now, I just have to order more fluid acrylics, and find a bunch of papers to add to the collage. Why is it that I just have to keep finding new things to do that cost me a lot of money?

Picasa Picnik

I use Google Picasa for my photo program - and I just got an update today. Went in to see what was new, and found a new toy -- Picnik!

This fun editing program allows me to:

Add a frame around my photo - it will make it look nicer when I upload it to my blog!

"Posterize" an inspiration photo - might make it easier for me to see the values!

And, I can also turn a photo into hexes - this might help me figure out how turn a subject into an abstract!

I'm excited to try all the fun things the program has to offer! And, it's free!
